ATVL Senior Mentor Fellow - Inaugural Cadre

Trey Thies recently retired after 36 years with Milliken & Company. He supported commercial and R&D teams with strategy development and execution, strategic marketing, and thought partnership in industrial textile markets including building & construction, tapes, and cable management. He led the due diligence and integration teams for a highly successful acquisition and led teams consolidating manufacturing facilities and integrating a significant book of acquired business.  He built relationships with four universities to discuss innovation and other opportunities and served on a technology scout team that screened 50+ opportunities and developed business cases for two multi-million-dollar investment opportunities.  His international experience includes almost four years as an ex-pat in Milliken’s European industrial textiles business in Ghent, Belgium, and leading the team that established Milliken’s operation in Bangalore, India. Additionally, he earned his Six Sigma Black Belt and designed the target account sales process used for years by multiple business units.
 
Trey is a real estate and angel investor with a deep interest in entrepreneurship. He has been a mentor for micro-entrepreneurs in Spartanburg’s Start:ME incubator/accelerator since its inception seven years ago. Additionally, he has served as Board President for Spartanburg’s Family Promise chapter helping homeless families, a member of the vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at USC-Upstate’s Johnson College of Business and Economics. He is a graduate of Davidson College (BA – Economics) and the University of North Carolina (MBA). As a senior mentor fellow with the American Technology Venture Lab, Trey Thies will enjoy sharing his extensive management experience from his distinguished career guiding major strategic decisions in business expansion of the Miliken & Company.
